What is Medical Massage?

Medical Massage” is applied to a specific area of the body on the basis of the pathology of the patient’s chief complaint. It is not a general massage treatment. ” (Lawton, 2002) The techniques used help to reduce inflammatory process, restore normal soft tissue environment, establish normal range of motion, and find improvements in the patient’s complaints.

At the beginning of your session you will be asked questions based off your intake form. You may be asked to perform some basic movements as well. I will try to gather as much information during assessment and throughout the session to help determine the underlying cause(s) of the present injury or ailment. Various therapeutic massage techniques will be used that may include: warm bamboo, deep tissue, stretching, percussive tools, heat and cold applications as well as suggested changes to your everyday lifestyle.

Session lengths generally start off longer and work toward shorter thirty or forty -five minute “upkeep” sessions. Longer sessions can be scheduled as needed after entering the “upkeep” stage of treatment.
